The State Department has expanded online-presence review to additional visa categories effective October 1, 2026. The newly added classifications include TN, TD, and I visas.
Applicants in those categories are instructed to set social-media profiles to public or open. Similar online-presence review already applies to numerous categories including F, J, H-1B and several dependent and humanitarian classifications.
This video explains who is affected, what the government says it is reviewing, and why applicants should not delete, hide, or fabricate information simply to influence a visa decision.
If you are applying for a U.S. visa, your social media may now be an even bigger part of the visa process.
Effective October 1, the State Department expanded its online-presence review to three additional visa classifications: TN, TD, and I visas for foreign media representatives.
Applicants in those categories are instructed to set their social-media privacy settings to public or open.
But this is not limited to those three categories. The State Department says online-presence review already applies to many other applicants, including F and M students, J exchange visitors, H-1B workers, certain H-4 dependents, K visa applicants, and several other classifications.
So what should applicants understand?
Consular officers may use publicly available online information as part of determining visa eligibility, including security concerns and whether the applicant appears likely to comply with the terms of the visa.
Important: Do not start deleting posts, creating false profiles, or changing information to make your history look different for the visa interview. Inconsistency or misrepresentation can create a much bigger immigration problem.
Review your DS-160 and your online information for accuracy. Be prepared to explain legitimate inconsistencies or old information if asked.
And remember: expanded screening does not mean every social-media post creates a visa denial. The visa decision still depends on the applicable immigration law and the facts of the case.
