ICE ORDERED TO IMPROVE NYC DETAINEE CONDITIONS

“Big news out of New York City—A federal judge has just ordered ICE to immediately improve conditions at its Manhattan detention facility inside 26 Federal Plaza. Why? Because detainees were being forced to live in shocking, inhumane conditions. What Triggered the Ruling? • Reports surfaced showing detainees sleeping on cold, dirty floors, with no soap, toothbrushes, or hygiene products. • Toilets were unsanitary, overcrowding was severe, and detainees often went without adequate food or medical care. • Several immigrant rights groups, including the ACLU and Make the Road New York, filed a lawsuit demanding immediate action. What the Judge Ordered Judge Lewis A. Kaplan issued a Temporary Restraining Order on August 12, 2025. Here’s what ICE must now do: 1. Reduce Overcrowding – Each person must get at least 50 square feet of space. 2. Daily Cleaning – Holding rooms must be cleaned three times a day. 3. Hygiene & Bedding – Detainees must be provided soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine products, sleeping mats, or clean bedding. 4. Legal Access – Confidential phone calls with lawyers must be available within 24 hours of detention. 5. Food & Water – ICE must provide an extra meal each day and access to drinking water, instead of forcing detainees to drink from unsanitary sources. 6. Medical Care – Medications and healthcare must be provided promptly. Reactions • Immigrant advocates called the ruling a huge step forward, but many say the facility should be shut down completely. • The ACLU emphasized that basic human rights were being denied. • ICE has acknowledged the complaints but insists it is already making improvements. Why It Matters • This ruling shines a light on systemic problems in U.S. immigration detention centers, not just in New York. • Similar lawsuits are underway in other states, including Florida. • For now, the order is temporary (14 days), but if ICE fails to comply, the judge could issue a long-term injunction.
