US HALTS ALL IMMIGRATION APPLICATIONS FROM 19 COUNTRIES / WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Today’s breaking update is critical for anyone following U.S. immigration policy — especially immigrants, attorneys, families, and advocates. The Trump administration has suspended all immigration applications from 19 countries currently listed under the expanded travel ban. This includes green card applications, citizenship naturalization, asylum requests, and more. What Happened? On December 2, 2025, USCIS announced an “adjudicative hold” on immigration benefits for people from 19 so-called “high-risk” countries. This is not a partial delay — it is a full pause on processing, and even applications already close to approval have been stopped. People who were about to take their citizenship oath were pulled out of line. Asylum seekers with interviews scheduled have been paused. Even immigrants already inside the U.S. for years are included. Which Countries Are Affected? The 19 countries include: Full-ban: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo (Republic), Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen. Partially restricted: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela. These restrictions affect tourists, students, business travelers, and immigrants, not just asylum applicants. Why Was This Done? The administration cites national security concerns following a recent shooting involving an Afghan asylum recipient. The government claims there are “systemic vetting failures,” and is reviewing all cases of immigrants from these 19 countries who arrived since January 20, 2021. USCIS is also preparing a list of cases to refer to law enforcement for re-investigation. Impact on Immigrants and Families This freeze: ● Stops green card approvals ● Cancels citizenship ceremonies ● Pauses asylum cases ● Creates major uncertainty for thousands of people ● Potentially delays reunification of families ● May trigger future enforcement actions Immigrant advocates warn this is collective punishment based on nationality, not individual risk. Why This Matters This policy represents one of the most sweeping freezes of legal immigration pathways in recent history. If you or someone you know is from one of the affected countries, this pause may impact deadlines, interviews, and approvals. Stay tuned — more updates are coming, and I’ll continue covering every major immigration change as it happens.
